The annual Santa Paws 5k Race/Walk in Palm Springs benefits Guide Dogs of the Desert. This year’s event, the fourth to occur, started at 9 am along a moderately uphill route through the city’s Las Palmas residential area. Reports were that 600 registrations were booked and a few more did the route as unregistered participants. Lions Club of Palm Springs was a major sponsor along with VCA Desert Animal Hospital (lots of doggies accompanied their owners on the route). The event welcomes runners, joggers, walkers, those with baby strollers, toddlers and doggies.

I’m a walker and my finishing time was 44 minutes. It was an uphill route for the first half followed, of course, by some welcome downhill. All participants were provided with Santa Claus costumes (red coat, pants and hat along with a black belt and a white beard with mustache) and I’m wearing my outfit in the photos below. The Santa costume turned out to be rather warm. I had to leave the hat and beard off in order to keep from overheating. Some, including most runners, opted for shorts and the top half of the costume.

All who participated received Finishing Medals. The competitive running top place finishers received trophies. All finishers received water, milk, cookies and candy. (Sorry about not including a photo of the cookies I received – they disappeared rather quickly).
